Looking at common things with new eyes is a running theme of Kena, and that theme often applies to its gameplay as well. Locations that were once the sites of vibrant and happy times are scarred with the pain and trauma suffered within them. Objects like a construction hammer or a box filled with food are tied to memories of people who have been lost. A wooden mask is a link to the spirit of the person for whom it was made. In short, it’s a solid debut from Ember and while it may seem familiar, you may enjoy the throwback to the older games it emulates. There’s nothing all that frustrating in that - we shouldn’t expect games, especially those made by studios the size of Ember Labs, to be constantly groundbreaking, but so much of Kena feels borrowed from elsewhere that it’s difficult to call it great.
